TRAVIS TWIRLS ONE-HITTER TO HELP SOFTBALL SPLIT AT LAFAYETTE

BOXSCORE GAME 2 EASTON, PA (3/23/04) - Playing for the first time in nine days, one would expect the Saint Joseph's softball team to show some rust in its first appearance in the Northeast. Ironically, it was the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Lafayette that proved difficult for the Hawks. Senior Dana Travis twirled a one-hitter in an 8-0 win in the opener, but SJU couldn't plate a single run in the nightcap, a 1-0 loss to the Leopards. Travis was nearly untouchable in the circle in game one, allowing only a lead-off single by Abby Weichert in the first inning. The captain struck out seven and walked three to even her record at 4-4 this season. The Hawks (6-12) took the lead for good in the second inning on a freshman Lauren Pachioli sacrifice fly that plated junior Robin Berry. Travis helping her own cause with a run-scoring single that scored freshman Rachel Pawlikowski, who had singled earlier. SJU added another run in the sixth, then exploded for five in the top of the seventh to seal the win. Berry was 2-for-4 with a triple, scored twice and drove in a pair. Pawlikowski also had two hits, including a double, for the Crimson and Gray. Neither team could mangae anything offensively in the first three innings, but the Leopards threatened in the fourth. With runners on second and third and one out, Gianna Lopreato hit a grounder that to second baseman Lindsey McNamara, who scooped and fired home to nail Lauren Belowich at the plate. The Leopards would later load the bases in the same inning, but freshman Lauren Hughes pitched out of the jam. Lafayette (4-8) finally dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Laura Schrager led off with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tara Martinho. Following a groundout, freshman catcher Kathryn Longshore launched a double that one-hopped off the right field fence and scored Schrager. St. Joe's rallied in its final at-bat, as McNamara and Berry each singled. But back-to-back fly outs ended the game. Hughes took the tough-luck loss, allowing one earned run on seven hits. The Hawks remain on the road to face Monmouth on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
