PHILADELPHIA (11/30/02) - Saint Joseph's juniors
Irina Krasnoshiok and
Amra Mehmedic combined for 35 points to power the SJU women's baskeball team to a 58-45 win over Boston University at the Fieldhouse. The Crimson and Gray, who improved to 1-2 overall, connected at a 50.0% clip from the field, while the Terriers shot just 28.8% and fell to 0-3 on the season.
The Hawks sprinted out to a 10 point lead at 14-4 behind the strong play of junior
Stephanie Graff. Graff tallied eight of SJU's first 14 points with Krasnoshiok and Mehmedic each contributed a three-pointer during the early spurt.
BU would trim the Hawks' advantage briefly down to eight points, 18-10, with 9:05 left, but St. Joe's responded with a 10-0 run to claim its largest lead of the opening half at 18 points, 28-10. SJU led at the break 28-15.
The Terriers would not get closer than a dozen in the second half, while the Hawks took the game's biggest lead at 51-26 with 10:04 remaining. SJU coasted to the finish line.
Krasnoshiok led all scorers with 18 points and also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Mehmedic, meanwhile added 17 points and five assists. Graff ended with 11 points and five boards.
Marisa Mosely topped BU with 17 points and six rebounds and Larissa Parr added 12 points and eight boards.
SJU never trailed in the contest with the game only knotted once at 2-2. The Hawks also hit at a 42.9% (6-14) clip behind the arc, while BU was 0-12 from three-point land. Efficient on the offensive end of the floor, the Hawks dished 21 assists on 23 field goals.
SJU sets off on Thursday for a grueling road trip that includes three games in five days. On Friday, SJU will take on Buffalo in the opening round of the Duke Classic in Durham, N.C. A victory over UB would likely set up a confrontation with #1 ranked Duke in the title game, a loss pits St. Joe's against Howard. Following the tournament, the Hawks head for State College, Pa. and a meeting with nationally-ranked Penn State on Tuesday.
