EAST NORRITON, PA (04/20/02) - Freshman
Alicia Cunic smashed a two-run homer over the left centerfield fence in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Saint Joseph's (24-10, 6-8 in A-10 play) to a 3-2 win over visiting Dayton (15-19, 10-4) in the first game of a doubleheader at East Norriton Field. Dayton rallied for five runs in the seventh inning of the nightcap to gain a split in the twinbill with a 5-1 victory.
Cunic's homer, her fifth of the season, drove in senior
Teresa Andreani, who had led off the inning with a double to deep center. Andreani had driven in the Hawks other run of the game with an RBI groundout in the first inning which scored freshman
Cara Deldeo, who led off the inning with a double to center.
The Flyers tied the game at 1-1 with an unearned run in the third inning. Senior Kerry White, who had two hits in the game, hit a one out single to center. Freshman Shannon St. Clair singled to right. Deldeo misplayed the ball, allowing it to get by her scoring White and advancing St. Clair all the way to third. Junior pitcher
Brandie Adams (10-3) got out of the jam by retiring the next two batters on infield grounders.
The Flyers took the lead with another unearned run in the sixth. Freshman Cassie Gross delivered a one out double to left center. Tiffany Ward then hit a shot to second which
Lindsey McNamara misplayed, scoring Gross.
That looked like that would be enough for UD sophomore hurler Dana Campbell (11-7). The Flyer pitcher had held the Hawks to two hits, and had retired 11 straight batters, striking out six. So a homer by Cunic, who was hitless in two at-bats, was unexpected, especially considering that Campbell had allowed only three homeruns all season.
In the nightcap, it was Dayton's turn to steal victory from the jaws of defeat. The Hawks took the lead with a leadoff second inning homer off the bat of McNamara. The blast to center was her seventh of the season, tying for fourth place on the SJU single season list.
That run looked like it would stand up as sophomore
Dana Travis held the Flyers to just one hit over the first five innings. Travis, who had pitched back-to-back shutouts in her last two outings looked on the verge of a trifecta. She struck out seven over the first six innings, with the Flyers only threat coming in the sixth when they strung two hits together, including a double by sophomore Megan Koestner.
Travis, however, was wild in the seventh, walking three batters to get herself in a jam. Dayton would go on to score five in the inning on three hits with the big blows coming on RBI singles by sophomores Tracie Weinheimer and Maegan Swisher. On Swisher's single, a throwing error by Cunic from behind the plate scored two more Flyers.
Campbell (12-7), who started both games, allowed just five hits while striking out seven to record the win. Travis fell to 13-6 on the season.
The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday. That will also be Senior Day for Saint Joseph's as Andreani,
Megan Brown,
Kristin Nau and
Missy Rhoades will all be playing their last Atlantic 10 Conference game on East Norriton Field.
