KINGSTON, RI (2/27/03) - Junior Erin Brady (16 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists) finished one assist shy of a triple double and classmate Irina Krasnoshiok led four Hawks in double figures as the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (17-9, 12-3 A-10) dumped Rhode Island (13-13, 5-10 A-10) in thier first visit to the Ryan Center.
SJU led at intermission, but Rhodey remained within striking distance throughout the second half. It was a four point game, 56-52, with 3:51 to play in the game. The Crimson and Gray then outscored the Rams 11-2 the rest of the way to account for the final margin of victory.
URI led by as many as six points in the game's opening minutes. SJU rallied to take the lead, but the Rams reclaimed the advantage. SJU finally went took the lead for good with 3:56 left in the opening half.
Brady did most of her damage in the first half, tallying 11 points, four board and six assists before the break. The 10 caroms for the game were a new career high. Her strong effort came up just shy of the second triple double in program history. Debbie Black (12 points, 12 boards, 10 steals) is the only Hawk to turn the trick, accomplishing it against Duquesne in 1988.
Krasnoshiok added 18 points and seven rebounds. Fellow juniors Stephanie Graff and Amra Mehmedic added 11 points apiece.
Shayla Johnson had 17 points to pace the Rams. Katie Stailing tallied 15 and tanya Rhodes had 12.
St. Joe's outshot URI 44.7% to 31.9% for the game. SJU also held significant advantages on the boards, 43-31 and at the charity stripe, 21-27 to 10-14.
The contest for the Hawks was their first at the Rams new Ryan Center, which will serve as the site of the Atlantic 10 Toutrnament next week.
SJU will close out the regular season at home on Sunday at 2:00 PM against St. Bonaventure. The team will salute seniors Colleen McGahan, Natasha Pronga, Takeya Trayer and Terraya Richardson in gregame ceremonies. Halftime festivities will celebrate 30 years of women's athletics at SJU.
