PHILADELPHIA (11/18/00) - Thanks to a
career-high 29-point performance by senior
Angela Zampella (Hoboken, NJ/St.
Dominic's), the St. Joseph's University women's
basketball team (1-0, 1-0 Big 5) held off a pesky
Pennsylvania (0-1, 0-1 Big 5) squad in the
regular season and Philadelphia Big Five opener
for both schools, 81-75. The victory kept SJU's
unblemished record against Penn intact, as the Cityliners improved to
26-0 in the all-time series.
Unable to deliver a knockout blow to the visiting Quakers, Zampella
provided a stabilizing influence for SJU, as Penn put up a furious
comeback late in the contest. Known best for her slick ball handling and
fancy passing, Zampella is also the best free throw shooter in school
history and she showed why down the stretch tallying six of the Hawks
final fourteen points, all of which came from the line. She finished the
game by making 13 of 14 foul shots, both career bests.
In addition to Zampella, SJU received 14-points apiece from juniors
Susan Moran (Tullamore, Ireland/Sacred Heart Academy) and Jane
Meade (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville). Entering the season, Hawk
