CINCINNATI, OH (02/08/02) - It was a mark that some thought would never be surpassed. On Hawk Hill, Dale Hodges' career scoring record of 2,077 was revered as perhaps the greatest individual accomplishment in the long and storied tradition of Saint Joseph's athletics.
When senior
Susan Moran connected on a driving layup with 9:30 left in the first half against Xavier at the Cintas Center, she moved past Hodges to become the all-time leading scorer in SJU basketball history. Moran finished the game with a team-high 24 points and now has 2,097 career points.
"[The record] is something that I never really thought about. A few people brought it up before the year and I said that if I hit 2,000 I would be a happy camper," mused Moran. "This just came along the way. It is a great honor and it's great to even be classified along the same lines as a player like Dale Hodges."
Already the most prolific free throw shooter in school history, it was only appropriate that Moran matched the milestone on a pair of free throws with 10:26 left in the first half. She had accumulated 549 of the points at the stripe during her career. The record fell just less than one minute later, again on a move she had made hundreds of times previously, a slicing drive to the hoop.
Reflecting on the heat of her pursuit of the mark, Moran said, "Honestly, I haven't been thinking about [the record] myself...but I think that everyone else has been. I think that it is good to get it done with."
Unfortunately for Moran and the Hawks the record was lost in a disappointing 75-61 loss to the Musketeers. The defeat was the fourth in six games for the Crimson and Gray, who slipped to 16-6 overall, 7-4 in the Atlantic 10. Xavier, meanwhile, spurred by a 30 point performance from junior Amy Waugh, improved to 9-14, 4-7 in the A-10.
Turnovers, suspect defense and three-point shooting were the clear cut differences in the game. The Hawks turned the ball over a season-high 28 times. XU capitalized on the giveaways, outscoring SJU 27-15 off turnovers. Meanwhile, Xavier drained a season-high nine three-pointers, including eight by Waugh.
Waugh entered the proverbial "ZONE" early in the second hald and singlehandedly took over the game. After SJU had trimmed the XU advantage down to just three points, Waugh hit on three pointers on three of Xavier's next four possessions to ignite a 17-6 run that put the Muskies up 48-34. Three more three-pointers later and the Blue and White's advantage had ballooned up to 18 points.
SJU got no closer than ten in the final 15 minutes.
"I want to credit them. They played tough, but we can play a lot tougher, stated Moran. "We're in a bit of a rut right now. We need to dig ourselves out of it with hard work."
In the first half, the lead went back-and-forth early, but a 15-0 run by the Musketeers turned a one-point Hawk lead into a 19-5 Xavier advantage. SJU fought back, however to trim the lead down to just a bucket with 2:15 left before intermission. An unlikely three-pointer by XU's Aida Sarajlija and layup by Waugh made it seven at the half, 31-24.
In addition to Moran's 24 points, sophomore
Stephanie Graff and senior
Amy Snell each added 11 points.
The Hawks departed immediately following the game and traveled to Dayton. SJU will face the Flyers at the Dayton Arena on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
