DUKES SNAP FOUR-GAME HAWK WINNING STREAK WITH 68-64 WIN

PITTSBURGH, PA (02/09/03) -- Saint Joseph's received 21 points and 11 rebounds from junior center Irina Krasnoshiok but it wasn't enough to overcome a 40-28 Duquense rebounding advantage as the Dukes snapped SJU's four-game winning streak with a 68-64 victory. Junior Stephanie Graff added 16 points in defeat. St. Joe's (14-8, 9-2 Atlantic 10) held a 52-51 lead at the 7:33 mark in the second half on a Krasnoshiok basket, but the Dukes (13-8, 6-4) would use a strong effort on the glass to take the lead in the closing minutes. Down 64-60 with under a minute to go after a freshman Maura McBryan basket, the Hawks still had hope but a Shiri Shannon layup proved to be the backbreaker. DU would stretch the lead to as many as eight down the stretch, its largest lead of the game, before Krasnoshiok would hit two free-throws and a jumper to make the final deficit just four. The game was tight for all 40 minutes as it featured 19 lead changes, including 11 in a back-and-forth first half. In the opening stanza, St. Joe's would take its largest lead of the game, 15-9, eight minutes into the game. Duquesne would claw its way back to cut the Hawk lead to just one, 33-32, heading into the locker rooms. It marked the first time all season that SJU had lost after leading at the half. Junior Erin Brady, who played 32 minutes after battling with food poisoning, scored 10 points and dished four assists. Saint Joseph's shot 47% from the floor, but the Dukes' 21 offensive rebounds led to 15 second chance points for the hosts. Candace Futrell scored 18 points to lead DU and Beth Friday added a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Crimson and Gray return to action Sunday, February 16 when it hosts Fordham at noon.
