COMPAIN AND RYAN GET CALL FROM BIG FIVE HALL OF FAME

PHILADELPHIA (1/09/03) - Former Saint Joseph's University women's basketball standout Megan Compain and long-time SJU administrator Ellen Ryan are the latest Hawk inductees into the Philadelphia Big Five Hall of Fame. Compain earned Big Five Player of the Year honors in 1997 after leading the Crimson and Gray to the City Series championship (4-0) that year. Ryan, meanwhile served as the coach of SJU's first varsity team and was instumental to the formation of the women's Big Five. The duo will be honored along with legendary Big 5 broadcaster Les Keiter, Villanova's Alvin Williams and La Salle's Chip Greenberg on Friday, January 24th at the annual Big 5 Hall of Fame luncheon, and then again at the Penn-Saint Joseph's men's basketball game on Saturday, January 25th. Both events take place at the Palestra. Compain was a three-time first team All-Big 5 player, starring at SJU from 1994-97. She led her teams to three Big 5 titles, and was named Big 5 MVP in 1997. Compain was also a three-time All-Atlantic 10 player, and Atlantic 10 Tournament MVP in 1997. She ranks second in Saint Joe's history with 91 double figure scoring games. After graduation, Compain played on the New Zealand national team in the 2000 Olympics, and also played for the WNBA's Utah Starzz. She currently is employed by And 1 in Paoli, PA. Ryan, who presently serves as SJU's associate director of athletics, was the first coach in the history of Saint Joe's women's program (1973-74). In her 28 years as an administrator, she has grown the university's women's athletic program from its early days to include 10 varsity sports. Ryan was instrumental is establishing the women's Big 5 program and City Series. Villanova alum and current Toronto Raptor Alvin Williams was an All Big Five second team selection as a Junior and voted Big 5 Player of the Year as a Senior in 1997. This product of Philadelphia and Germantown Academy was also voted first team All Big East as a senior. Williams scored 1,423 points in his career from 1993-97 and ranks third on Villanova's all-time assist list (553). Les Keiter became the voice of the Big 5 during his six-year stint broadcasting the entire Big 5 schedule on radio, and bringing selected city series games to television in 1963. His signature broadcast style made the WFIL-TV and radio sports director a fan favorite. Keiter cemeted his place in Big 5 history during "the Bomb Scare" in 1965 - continuing his live television broadcast as the Palestra evacuated. La Salle's Chip Greenberg was named first team All-Big 5 and All-MAAC in 1986. Greenberg was a consummate team player for the Explorers from 1982-86, leading the team in assists all four years, and in rebounds his senior year. He's currently ranked 4th in all time assists, and is 28th on La Salle's list of top scorers with 1,227 points. All inductees will be honored at the Hall of Fame luncheon on Friday, January 24th.
