ANDREANI'S HOT BAT HELPS HAWKS SPLIT WITH 'NOVA

VILLANOVA, PA (04/23/02) - Senior Teresa Andreani smashed a two-run homer over the rightcenter field fence in the top of the first and then doubled home another run to stake Saint Joseph's to a 3-0 lead, and the pitching combination of junior Brandie Adams and sophomore Dana Travis shut down host Villanova for a 5-3 win in the opening game of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats took the second game, 5-2, as junior hurler Theresa Hornick (20-6) became just the third Villanova pitcher to win 20 games in a season at the school. The games were played at the Villanova Softball Field, although SJU was the "home" team in both games. Andreani, who went 2-for-2 with 3 RBI in the opener, crushed a pitch from freshman Shannon Williams in the bottom of the first inning, scoring freshman Cara Deldeo, who opened the game with a single to center. SJU picked up a solo run in the third as Andreani doubled home freshman Megan Richardson, who had led off the frame with a single. In the fifth, senior Megan Brown, who has been red hot the last three games (4-for-6 on the day), doubled to right to start the inning. Richardson then sacrificed Brown to third for the first out. Deldeo then took a pitch off the elbow, putting runners at the corners. Deldeo stole second, but senior Kristin Nau struck out for the second out of the inning. Williams (11-2) then intenionally walked Andreani to bring freshman Alicia Cunic to the plate. The A-10 Rookie of the Week, who had struck out her first two times up, made Villanova pay by driving in two runs with a single to left to bring her team-leading total to 34 on the season. Deldeo, the team's second leading hitter at .339, had to be taken out of the game following the inning. She did not see action the rest of the day. With the Hawks leading 5-0, the game appeared in the bag as Adams was cruising along. The junior hurler retired 14 straight after the game's leadoff hitter, Ricci Lugo, reached base via an error. The Wildcats picked up their first hit in the fifth, and then broke out in the sixth. Sarah Carlson drove home two unearned runs for Villanova with a double to left center. Then Ally Wisniewski doubled her home to close to withing 5-3 of the Hawks. Travis then came in and shut the door, allowing no hits and striking out two to record the team's first save of the 2002 campaign. In the nightcap, the Wildcats roughed up Travis for 12 hits and five runs in taking the 5-2 decision. Villanova strung two hits together and then catcher Sarah Wall drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the second. The Hawks literally stole a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. With runners at the corners and two outs, Brown, who had reached base via a single, broke for second. Wall fired to the shortstop with senior Missy Rhoades (single) breaking from third. Brown got in a run down and Rhoades scored before the Hawk left fielder was tug out to end the inning. Villanova scored twice in the fourth, courtesy of a two-run single by Lugo, to take a 3-1 lead. Cunic answered with a solo blast in the bottom half, her sixth of the year, to make it 3-2. The Wildcats, which entered the series with a. 312 team batting average, picked up two more runs in the fifth as Heather Garboden drove in two runs with a single. The Hawks were unable to mount any more threats as Kristen Haynes relieved Hornick in the sixth to pick up her fourth save of the season. SJU, 26-11, now travels to College Park, Md., for their first ever meeting with the Terps. Villanova moves to 39-10 on the season.
