SJU BLANKS ST. FRANCIS-NY, 3-0, 8-0

BROOKLYN, NY (04/18/02) -- Sophomore Dana Travis pitched a one-hit shutout, and freshman Cara Deldeo followed with a five-hit shutout, leading the Saint Joseph's University Hawks (23-9) to a sweep of their doubleheader with the St. Francis College Terriers (12-24) at Gil Hodges Field. The Hawks won the first game, 3-0, and captured the second game, 8-0. Saint Joseph's gave Travis all of the support she would need in the top half of the second inning in game one. Sophomore Lindsey McNamara led off with a single, and moved to second when the ball was misplayed in left field for an error. Senior Missy Rhoades advanced her to third with a groundout, and she then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Desiree McGhie. The Hawks added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. McGhie led off with a single, and after one out, freshman Megan Richardson hit a ground ball to the right side of the mound. However, nobody covered first base, allowing her to reach on a single and send McGhie to third. On the play, second base was left unattended, and Richardson advanced into scoring position.Freshman Robin Berry's subsequent ground ball to first resulted in a throwing error on an attempted play at the plate, allowing two runs to score. Sophomore Christina Brovakos' leadoff single in the fourth inning accounted for the only Terrier hit. Senior Samantha Griffin was charged with the loss, despite allowing only one earned run. McNamara, McGhie, and senior Megan Brown each collected two hits for the Hawks. In the nightcap, senior Teresa Andreani's RBI double scored senior Kristin Nau and freshman Alicia Cunic's sacrifice fly plated Andreani to give SJU a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Hawks added four more runs in the second, with Cunic driving in three of the runs on a bases-loaded double. Deldeo, making only her third start of the season, did not walk a batter while striking out three for the Hawks and earned her first win of the season. She and Andreani drove in the final two runs in the top of the sixth. Deldeo, Nau, and Andreani each collected two hits for Saint Joseph's, while sophomore Joanna Santino was two-for-two for the Terriers. The Hawks now take a four-game win streak into their all-important Atlantic 10 Conference home series with Dayton this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and a single game on Sunday (noon).
