SOFTBALL SPLITS AT RUTGERS WITH DRAMATIC FOUR-RUN 7TH INNING IN OPENER

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (04/23/03) - Junior Lindsey McNamara drove in two runs with a double and scored what proved to be the winning run to cap a four-run seventh inning in leading Saint Joseph's to a 5-4 win over host Rutgers in the first game of a doubleheader. The Scarlet Knights exploded for 10 runs in the first three innings to take the nightcap, 13-4. Sophomore Cara Deldeo (4-2) picked up her second straight win for the Hawks in the opener, allowing nine hits and four earned runs. Deldeo also went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring twice and driving in a run. McNamara had two hits for the in the win while Gale Treskot chipped in with a leadoff double in the Hawks' seventh inning rally. In the second game, Rutgers jumped all over starter Dana Travis (8-5), plating four runs in the first inning. Nikki Childress, who hit a two-run home run in the first game, blasted a three-run homer in the inning, her sixth of the season. On the day, Childress, who has a .469 average, was 5-for-6 with four runs scored and five RBI. Desiree McGhie hit her third homerun of the week in the top of the second to close it to 4-1, but Rutgers scored six more in the bottom of the third to break the game wide open. Besides Childress, Melissa Bradford and Crystal Vargas each went 3-for-3 in the second game for Rutgers, which racked SJU for 13 hits and 13 runs over four innings. The game was called in the fifth due to the eight-run rule. For SJU, Megan Richardson (2-3) was the lone Hawk with two hits in the contest while Deldeo and McNamara each drove in a run. The Hawks, 20-9 on the season, will next travel to Dayton for a Friday afternoon doubleheader with the Flyers. A win clinches a berth in the four-team Atlantic 10 Tournament. Rutgers is now 21-16 on the year.
