COLLEGE PARK, MD (04/24/02) - Saint Joseph's travelled to ACC country to face the Maryland Terappins for the first time in school history. Despite the absence of leadoff hitter
Cara Deldeo, who ranks second on the squad in hitting with a .339 average, the Hawks held their own, but lost identical heartbreakers to the host team, by 2-1 scores.
Senior
Megan Brown continued her hot bat in the twinbill, going 4-for-8 to up her season average to .300. The Hawk outfielder had a hand in SJU's run in the opener. After
Desiree McGhie reached base via an error with two out in the second, Brown singled to put runners at first and second. Then freshman
Robin Berry doubled McGhie home to put SJU ahead 1-0.
Junior
Brandie Adams (11-4) held the Terps scoreless until the fifth inning when Casey Leiter led off with a single through the left side. Kiesha Pickeral bunted Leiter to second. Senior catcher Beth Radford doubled in Leiter to tie the game at one. Adams held Terrapin bats in check until the bottom of the seventh when Cyphert singled home Radford for the win.
In the nightcap, sophomore
Dana Travis (14-8), who set the SJU single season strikeout record over the weekend, was superb. Travis, who upped her season strikeout total to 145, fanned 12 Terps, while allowing only eight hits over the 12.1 innings she pitched.
Her counterpart, Monica Cyphert (10-3), was up to the challenge, fanning 13 Hawks over 13 innings as the two faced off in a classic pitching duel.
Maryland (28-18) scored a run in the first to take the lead, but SJU answered with a tying run in the fourth.
Alicia Cunic singled to center with one out, and advanced all the way to third on an error by the Terps outfielder. With
Gale Treskot running, sophomore
Lindsey McNamara delivered an RBI single to tie the game.
The Hawks strung together three hits in the fifth, including a double by Brown, to load the bases with no one out. But the Terps got out of the jam.
In the eighth, SJU loaded the bases with one out on a single by
Teresa Andreani, a double by Cunic and an intentional walk issued to McNamara. Senior
Missy Rhoades then flied to center and Andreani was gunned out at the plate trying to score.
In the 13th, Maryland freshman Nneka Cardoza led off with a single through the left side and advanced on Beth Radford's sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Malissa Moczulski followed Radford with a game-winning RBI single through the right side.
The Hawks, 26-13, will host Rutgers in their last regular season home doubleheader at East Norriton on Thursday.
