PRINCETON, NJ (05/01/02) - Sophomore
Dana Travis hurled a four-hit shutout in the opener to help Saint Joseph's to 1-0 win over the Northeast Region's second-ranked team, Princeton on Wednesday afternoon. The Ivy League Champions captured the nightcap, 3-2, in a thrilling 10-inning battle.
Travis, who upped her record to 16-8 on the year, was brilliant for the Hawks in tossing seventh shutout of the season. The SJU strikeout leader only fanned one Tiger, but allowed just two runners to reach second base, none advanced to third.
The Hawks, 29-14, collected just three hits off senior hurler Brie Galicinao (16-7) in spoiling her final game at 1895 Field.
SJU's lone run came in the first inning. Freshman
Cara Deldeo, who later roped her 13th double of the season, walked to lead off the game. Senior
Kristin Nau dropped her team-high 15th sacrifice of the season to advance her to second. Senior
Teresa Andreani then dribbled one down the first base line which was fielded by Galicinao, who threw to the second baseman Kristin Lueke, covering first. Lueke misplayed the throw for an error with Deldeo coming around to score her team-high 36th run.
Travis, who tied Janielle Hoffman (1996) for third place on the SJU all-time season win list, was more than capable of closing the door. It was also Travis' 29th career win, tying teammate
Brandie Adams, who sat out the doubleheader due to a cortisone shot in her pitching arm, as well as Dawn Mycock (1986-89) and Chris Sweeney (1995-98) for fifth on the all-time win list. Finally, the Newark, Delaware native tied four other SJU pitchers for second on the SJU season shutout list, just two behind Bonnie Gasior's nine shutouts set in 1993.
It was just the second time in 17 games that the Tigers had lost at home this season, and the SJU win snapped a 10-game Princeton win streak. The NCAA-bound Tigers are now 32-16 after the twinbill.
Deldeo (1-2) made just her fourth start of the season in the second game, and looked strong on the mound. She scattered 12 hits over 9 and one-third innings, giving up just two earned runs.
Galicinao, playing left field, opened the game with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice and third on a passed ball before scoring on an RBI single by Becky Nemec.
SJU tied it in the third on an RBI single off the bat of Nau, scoring
Megan Richardson who extended her hitting streak to nine games.
Princeton shortstop Kim Veenstra homered to lead off the bottom of the sixth, her eighth of the season, putting the Tigers ahead 2-1. Sophomore
Lindsey McNamara countered that with her eighth homer to lead off the top of the seventh for SJU, sending the game into extra innings.
In the ninth, the Tigers got a leadoff triple by Veenstra, loaded the bases, but Deldeo worked her way out of the jam. First, Wendy Bingham, who had two hits in the game, grounded into a first-catcher-second base double play. Then after Galicinao was intentionally walked to reload the bases, Sarah Jane White grounded to Nau at short who flipped to third baseman
Desiree McGhie for the out. At first, the base umpire called the runner safe, giving the game to the Tigers, but Hawk coach Moo Moyer appealed to the home plate umpire, who reversed the call.
It was only a brief stay for the Hawks, as Nemec doubled home Veenstra, who singled for her third hit of the game to give Princeton the win.
SJU now will play at La Salle tomorrow at 5:00 p.m., before concluding the regular season with an A-10 series at Rhode Island on Saturday-Sunday.
