Box Score

EAST NORRITON, PA - The Saint Joseph's softball team split a doubleheader with Rider Tuesday afternoon, falling 7-3 in the opener, but winning the nightcap 6-1 at East Norriton Field.

In game two, the Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Megan Richardson scored the opening run of the game off a RBI single by classmate Alicia Cunic. Cunic, who stole second, would come around to score on a single by senior Cara Deldeo. Deldeo would plate the third run of the inning as sophomore Rachel Pawlikowski reached on an error by Rider's first baseman, allowing Deldeo to score.

On the mound, Saint Joseph's sophomore hurler Lauren Hughes was solid for the Hawks, holding Rider scoreless over the first five.

Meanwhile, the Hawks tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third on a three-run homer off the bat of Pawlikowski.

Hughes would finish the game, allowing only one run on four hits. She added seven strikeouts as she improved to 3-7 on the year.

In the opener, Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Cunic two-run homer.

Rider would add a run in the top of the third, but the Hawks extended their lead to two again in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by senior Robin Berry.

Unfortunately for Saint Joseph's, Rider took advantage of three Hawk errors in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs to take a 7-3 advantage.

Saint Joseph's placed runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh, but couldn't get them in as Rider held on to win 7-3.

Freshman hurler Lauren Cognigni was the hard-luck loser on the game, allowing seven runs on eight hits, while striking out four. She falls to 5-5 on the season as Saint Joseph's finished the game with five errors.

On the day, Cunic led the way for the Hawks at the plate, finishing four-for-seven with three RBI and three runs scored.

With the split, the Hawks move to 8-12, while Rider goes to 6-14

Saint Joseph's returns to action Thursday when they travel to Villanova for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
