RICHMOND, VA -
Senior Doug Rick set a conference record and led a one-two Hawk finish in the 400m dash to lead the Saint Joseph's men's track team to an eighth place finish at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held at Sports Backer Stadium.
Rick won the 400m dash in a meet-record time of 47.23, eclipsing the previous best of 47.30, set by Marc Sylvander of Massachusetts in 2000. He was followed across the line by junior Andrew Thomas with a time of 47.35 to give SJU a pair of All-Conference performers in the event.
The duo also anchored the Hawks 4x400 relay team which took first in a time of 3:21.97 to take first team All-Conference honors. Senior Collin Martin also was tabbed All-Conference after finishing second in the Steeplechase in a time of 9:10.72.
Martin also placed well in the 5000m, where he and teammate Andre Laboy both scored. Laboy placed fourth in a time of 14:53.98, while Martin was sixth (15:08.75).
SJU also received top performances from several other individuals. Matt Petrocci placed fifth in the 800m (1:55.99). Freshman Bobby Staten scored in both the 100m (10.76) and 200m (22.01), finishing seventh in both events. Sophomore Chris Alerxander was seventh in the triple jump (43-10). The 4x800 relay was also seventh.
SJU was without the services of several probable scorers, including junior Mike DiDio and sophomore Teddy Meyers.
Rhode Island to an unprecedented fifth consecutive title. URI amassed 198 points, just 14.5 more than runner-up La Salle (183.5). Duquesne finished third with 159 points followed by Fordham (63 points), Richmond (62.5), Massachusetts (61), Temple (60), Saint Joseph's (57), and Xavier (7).
