Hawks Fly Past Saint Louis 69-50 on Fieldtrip to the Fieldhouse

PHILADELPHIA - With a raucous crowd of 2,468 fans in attendance, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team improved to 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play as the Hawks downed the Billikens 69-50 on Fieldtrip to the Fieldhouse day.

Trailing 20-19 with 5:31 remaining in the first half, Saint Joseph's broke open the game with an 18-0 run that stretched into the opening minute of the second half. The Hawks took a 33-20 edge into halftime freshman guard Jenna Loschiavo added two three pointers during the run. Senior forward Faith Schutte capped the run with a layup 51 seconds into the second half.

Saint Louis would cut the deficit to 10, 37-27, but would get no closer as the Hawks quickly scored the next seven points to take a 44-27 edge at 14:28. The Billikens would get no closer than 15 over the remainder of the game as Saint Joseph's opened its biggest lead, 22, with three minutes remaining.

For the game, the Hawks finished 28-of-57 from the field (49.1 percent) with nine of those baskets coming from behind the arc. At the other end, Saint Louis finished 18-of-45 from the field. Despite being out rebounded 28-27, Saint Joseph's grabbed a season-high 12 steals to go along with 22 assists.

Individually, Schutte paced the Hawks with a career-high 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting, while freshman guard Jen Oyler was the only other Saint Joseph's player to score in double figures with 12. Eleven of the Hawks 13 players to see action scored at least two points.


For the Billikens, Tyler McIlwraith led the way with 18 points, while Yanique Javois added nine.

With the victory, the Hawks improve to 11-4 on the season and 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Saint Louis falls to 3-12 with the loss and 0-4 in conference play. Saint Joseph's win is also its first over the Billikens as the two squads had never played prior to this afternoon. This is Saint Louis first season in the A-10 and its first trip to Philadelphia. The game also marked the eighth time the Hawks have held Fieldtrip to the Fieldhouse for area school children and is the 10th best attended home game in program history.

Saint Joseph's hits the road for its next three contests beginning Sunday at Fordham. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Rose Hill Gym.
