Atlantic 10 newcomer Charlotte used a 33-4 run over the final 13 minutes of the first half as the 49ers downed the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team 81-50 Friday evening at Halton Arena.
The Hawks held an early 4-2 edge, but the lead was short lived as Charlotte scored six straight to take its first lead, one it would never relinquish.
Leading 16-9 at 13:06, the 49ers' defense held Saint Joseph's scoreless over the next eight minutes, building up a 28-9 lead. Charlotte closed out the first stanza on a 33-4 run as senior forward Pam Brown paced the 49ers with 14 first-half points.
In the second half, the Hawks refused to back down, but the deficit was too much. Saint Joseph's outscored the 49ers 37-32 in the second half, but Charlotte's first-half advantage carried them to a 81-50 victory.
For the game, the Hawks shot 32.7 percent from the field (15-of-52), but just 24 percent in the first half. Charlotte finished the game 31-of-56 for 55.4 percent, and caused 18 Saint Joseph's turnovers.
Individually, sophomore guard Timisha Gomez led the Hawks with 11 points, while freshman center Hillary Klimowicz add 10 and seven rebounds.
At the other end, Brown and sophomore guard Sabrina Gregory add 20 points apiece.
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Charlotte improved to 11-5 with the win and 4-1 in conference play.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. as it travels to Big-5 rival La Salle.
