Powered by a 24-2 first half run, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team downed St. Bonaventure 59-43 Friday evening at the Reilly Center. With the win, the Hawks improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while SBU slipped to 6-7, 0-2 A-10. Junior Ayahna Cornish led the Crimson and Gray with a season-high 22 points, while limiting the Bonnies top scorer Stefanie Collins to just three points.
Despite trailing early, 5-4, Saint Joseph's shortly opened the game thanks to a 24-2 run from 16:21 to 6:32 of the first half. Junior guard Ayahna Cornish scored 12 of her game-high 22 points during that stretch as the Hawks took a 28-7 advantage.
Over the final minutes, both team would score 10 apiece as Saint Joseph's took a 38-17 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Bonnies came out hot, scoring the opening 11 points of the stanza to cut the deficit to 10, 38-28 at 16:04.
St. Bonaventure cut the deficit to nine twice from there, but the Hawks with held the Bonnies' run as they led by double digits over the final 11 minutes.
For the game, the Hawks shot 40.4 percent from the field (23-of-57), while the Bonnies finished at 36.2 percent (17-of-47), despite going just 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) in the first half.
Individually, Cornish paced the Hawks with 22 points, four rebounds and an assist, while senior forward Faith Schutte added 14 and seven rebounds.
For St. Bonaventure, forward Audrey Latendresse led the way with 14 points, while Priscilla Edwards added 11. Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection Stefanie Collins was held to just three points.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the A-10. St. Bonaventure, which opened the season with a program-best 5-0 start, falls to 0-2 in A-10 play and 6-7 overall.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Sunday, hosing George Washington at 3:00 PM at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
