Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's determination was not enough to take down #17 Richmond, as the Spiders overpowered the Hawks for a 6-1 win. SJU's record falls to 9-9 overall and 3-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond moves to 13-4 overall and remains undefeated in conference play at 6-0.

The Hawks struggled to break into the defensive end of the field as the Spider defense shut them down most of the first half, allowing no SJU shots in the first stanza. Richmond started off the scoring 3:35 minutes in, when junior Tara Kelly made a short pas across the net to Senior Heather Wrublesky who tucked the ball into the bottom left corner. The Spiders went on to score two more goals before the break. Junior Shannon Taylor notched both, the first coming off a rebound from goalie Rebecca Cunfer's stick, and the second a blast from in front of the goal into the top of the cage.

Saint Joseph's came out with even more intensity in the second half, but Taylor was not yet satisfied and put in Richmond's fourth goal six minutes in off a penalty corner. Freshman Jess Weidner and Kelly assisted on the play. Minutes earlier SJU had been awarded a penalty stroke by senior Nicole Antonini was unable to capitalize. The Hawks managed to increase the offensive pressure, getting of shots but the Spiders again turned the tables and increased the lead to five at 59:37 when Freshman Lindsey Conrad scored, assisted by classmate Lena Voelmle. A rash of penalty corners for both teams ensued. Richmond notched its sixth goal at 64:19 when Taylor blasted in another shot from the top of the arch for her fourth goal of the game. With less than two minutes remaining, senior Lauren Luft put the Hawks on the board as freshman Anne Schreuders tipped the ball to Luft who took a spin shot from the ride side to knock it past the goalie into the left corner of the cage. The game ended in a penalty opportunity for Saint Joseph's with time expired on the clock. The corner resulted in two shots, neither of which found the back of the net.

Richmond out-shot Saint Joseph's 27-8 and edged the Hawks in penalty corners 11-5. Junior Brooke Henry had two defensive saves for the day. Cunfer faced 19 shots on goal, with 13 saves for the day.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, October 28th in their final game of the season as they take on conference rival Temple. The home game is set to start at noon. Be sure to arrive early as the seniors are recognized for their commitment to the program.
