Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Coming back from as many as 17, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team fought back to within two possessions of Hartford, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks dropped their first game of the season, 62-52, Friday night at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.

Trailing 45-30 early in the second half, Saint Joseph's gritted its teeth, and behind a 17-8 run, cut the deficit to six, 53-47 on a jump shot by junior Timisha Gomez with 6:20 remaining in the contest.

Unfortunately for SJU, Hartford scored the next two baskets and quickly regained its double-digit lead, 58-47 on a Lisa Etienne jumper at 4:10.

Saint Joseph's cut the deficit back to seven, 58-51, on a free throw by senior Erica Pollock and three-point play by Ayahna Cornish with just 2:43 left in the contest. However, that would be the closest the Hawks got as Hartford held on for the victory.

In the first half, Hartford came out strong, taking a 16-6 lead to start the game. Hartford converted six of its first 10 shots and finished 14-of-28 from the floor in the first stanza.

Saint Joseph's responded by scoring the next five points, only to have Hartford answer with 19-5 run to take a 35-18 lead on a Katie Kelley layup with 1:51 remaining in the half and would take a 35-20 edge into the locker room.

For the game, Saint Joseph's finished 22-of-67 from the floor (32.8 percent) and just 7-of-18 from the foul line (38.9 percent). At the other end, Hartford went 24-of-53 on the night (45.3 percent) and converted 12 of its 19 free throw attempts (63.2 percent).

Individually, Cornish led the way with a team-high 11 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Gomez was the only other SJU Hawk to score in double digits, adding 10.

For Hartford, Danielle Hood and Ikea Witt paced the offense with 15 points each, while Kelley finished with 13.

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 1-1 on the year, while Hartford improves to 2-1.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday, November 19, at Virginia Commonwealth University at 1 p.m.
