Box Score

RICHMOND, VA - Saint Joseph's field hockey fell in the Atlantic 10 Championship Final Saturday, to Richmond, 3-2. It is the first time in program history that a team has earned a second place Atlantic 10 finish in the regular season and the tournament. Junior Marisa Pizzi and freshman Anne Schreuders combined for the Saint Joseph's goals.

Richmond opened up the scoring 16:19 into the first half with Freshman Lindsey Conrad deflecting the ball into the net off a cross from senior Heather Wrublesky. Up until that point, the Hawks had dominated the ball and held the Spiders to zero shots. Four minutes later, Saint Joseph's tied up the score as Schreuders dribbled in from the top of the arc after a penalty corner attempt. Schreuders smacked the ball into the left side of the goal for her fourth goal of the season. Although Richmond seemed to dominate the ball for the remainder of the half, the Hawks' defense held strong, going into the break with the score tied at 1-1.

The second half opened with the Spiders taking the lead seven minutes in as Conrad scored her 19th goal of the season for Richmond. The score came after senior Shannon Taylor took a shot from the right side, SJU junior goalie Rebecca Cunfer made the save, but was caught on the ground when Conrad knocked in the rebound. At 55:25, Richmond widened the lead, with Wrublesky deflecting the ball off an assist from junior Erin Arthur. With just :23 seconds remaining, Pizzi brought the Hawks within a goal, off a short pass from senior Lauren Luft. The goal was Pizzi's eighth of the season. Unfortunately, the goal came too late for the Hawks who were unable to tie the game before time expired.

The Hawks had 11 shots and 7 penalty corners for the day. Cunfer made eight saves.

Following the game, the All-Tournament team was announced. Seniors Nicole Antonini and Maureen Casserly, along with freshman Anne Schreuders were named to the team. Also named to the team were Lindsey Conrad, Jodi Murphy, and Ines Reimundes from Richmond, and Alli Lokey, Erin Hanshue, and Leanne Vogelsong from Temple.

The Hawks end the 2006 season 11-10 overall and second in the Atlantic 10.
