PHILADELPHIA - Showing grit and determination, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team fought back from a 10-point second half deficit to take a lead midway through the second half, but couldn't hold on as the Hawks fell to Big 5 rival #22/23 Temple 59-53 Friday night at the Liacouras Center.
Trailing 32-22 early into the second half, Saint Joseph's struck back with a 13-0 run over a three-minute span to take a 35-33 lead on a layup by junior guard Whitney Ffrench at 12:26.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, their lead was short lived. With the game knotted at 40 apiece, the Owls opened up an 11-point lead, 51-40 from 9:21 to 5:38 to take control of the game.
Saint Joseph's would get no closer than five, 58-53, over the remaining time.
In the first half, the Hawks controlled the scoreboard for a majority of the time, with their biggest lead coming on a jump shot by Ffrench at 13:21 to give SJU an 11-6 advantage.
An 11-0 run over the final 6:04 was the difference in the first stanza as Temple held Saint Joseph's scoreless over that period to take a 25-17 lead into the lockerroom.
For the game, the Hawks finished 19-of-54 from the field (35.2 percent) and 12-of-15 from the line (80 percent). At the other end, the Owls went 21-of-55 (38.2 percent) and 16-of-23 from the foul line (69.6 percent).
Individually for Saint Joseph's, freshman center Hillary Klimowicz paced the way with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also added one block to go with her fifth double-double of the season, tying her for 10th all-time in SJU history in career blocks with 54. Sophomore guard Timisha Gomez and freshman guard Jen Oyler both added 11 points apiece.
At the other end, All-American candidate Candice Dupree added 20 points and 17 rebounds for the Owls.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 16-9 on the season 1-2 in Big 5 action and 8-5 in the Atlantic 10. the victory improves the Owls to 19-6 overall, 10-3 in the A-10 and gives Temple the city-series crown at 4-0.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Sunday at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse as the Hawks host senior day against La Salle. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
