Hawks Split Doubleheader at Drexel

April 11, 2006

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - A two-run ninth inning helped the Saint Joseph's softball team earn a split of its doubleheader at Drexel Tuesday afternoon as the Hawks won the nightcap 5-3 in nine innings after dropping the opener 2-0.

In game two, Drexel jumped out to a 3-0 edge in the bottom of the third as the Dragons scored three runs with two out off of the Hawks' sophomore pitcher Lauren Cognigni. Drexel's Ashlee Veilleux put her squad up 2-0 with a two-run triple and would come around to score on a triple by Sandi Wambold.

The Hawks responded in the top half of the fourth, scoring three runs to knot the game at three. Senior first baseman Lynn Ravert got SJU on the board with a RBI ground out. With the bases loaded, the Hawks drew a pair of walks to score the tying runs.

From there, Cognigni took over, holding the Dragons to only two hits over the final six innings.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, their offense halted as well, forcing extra innings.

Saint Joseph's struck first, scoring two in the top of the ninth on bases-loaded walk of junior third baseman Rachel Pawlikowski and a RBI single by sophomore outfielder Kate Falasca.

In the bottom half of the inning, Cognigni retired the Dragons in order, finishing the game with 13 strike outs to improve to 7-9 on the year.

In the opener, the Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 edge in the bottom of the first as Drexel touched up SJU junior pitcher Lauren Hughes with a pair of RBI singles by Veilleux and Molly Dacey.

From there, the game became a pitchers dual as Hughes allowed only one more hits over the final five innings, but it wasn't enough as Drexel's Amanda Heyser kept the Hawks off the scoreboard, allowing only three SJU hits to earn the complete game shutout. With the loss, Hughes fell to 3-7 on the year.

With the split, the Hawks move to 11-24-1 on the year, while the Dragons go to 11-20.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Thursday for a doubleheader at Massachusetts.
