Behind the first RBIs of sophomore Lauren Cognigni's career, the Saint Joseph's softball team earned a split at Rhode Island Saturday, dropping the opener 6-3, but winning the second 5-2.
In game two, the Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring three in the top of the fourth. Freshman Sarah Falk got SJU on the board with a RBI single, scoring Erika Rosenwinkel on the play. With two outs and the bases loaded, Cognigni drilled a two-run double down the left-field line, scoring two Hawks on the play.
Saint Joseph's added a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth to extend its lead to 5-0 on a Kelsey Moir home run and a sacrifice fly by senior Lynn Ravert.
On the mound, Cognigni was solid, allowing only two runs, both coming in the seventh, on three hits, while striking out six to earn the victory.
In the opener, Saint Joseph's took a 3-0 edge, scoring a run in the top of the third and adding one more in the fourth.
Rhode Island quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to gain a 3-2 advantage.
Courtney Wall led off the fourth with a single to left center and eventually scored by stealing home. Christine Gentile scored the Ram's second run of the inning on a fielder's choice after reaching base with a single to right field. Victoria Roberts plated the third run on a RBI double to center field by Kassie Harrelson.
The Rams added three more in the fifth to widen to gap to 6-2. Stefani Poedubicky led off with a walk and Danielle Quimby reached on an error by the pitcher after a sacrifice bunt to advance Poedubicky to second. Courtney Wall followed with an infield single leaving three Rams on the bases. Gentile hit a two run single to right field, scoring Quimby and Poedubicky. After a Saint Joseph's pitching change, Gentile scored on a past ball for the Ram's final run of the game.
The Hawks added one more run in the top of the sixth off a solo homerun by Kelsey Moir. Hawk starter Lauren Hughes suffered the loss, throwing four innings and giving up five earned runs on seven hits.
With the split, the Hawks move to 12-25-1 on the season and 3-5 in the A-10. Rhode Island moves to 13-18 and 5-7 in the A-10.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Villanova.
