The 10th annual Atlantic 10 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 6-7, at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center at Charlotte.
Rhode Island seeks its fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 women's title after totaling 150.0 points last year en route to winning the crown. Duquesne amassed 135.0 points to finish runner-up at the 2005 Championship, its highest finish in program history. Two-time champion Massachusetts (1999, 2001) will be joined by Charlotte, Dayton, Fordham, La Salle, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Temple, and Xavier in its quest for the women's title.
Duquesne senior Kristen Micsky, who garnered Most Outstanding Field Performer honors at last year's Championship, will look to defend her titles in the long jump, triple jump and 400m hurdles, while senior Kelly Pohlman of Dayton seeks her third consecutive gold medal in the shot put.
On the men's side, Rhode Island seeks an A-10-record sixth straight title after edging runner-up La Salle at last year's Championship, 198.0-187.5. The Rams' streak will be put to the test by the Explorers, who have finished in second place the past three years, along with Charlotte, Duquesne, Fordham, Massachusetts, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Temple, and Xavier.
Ashhad Agyapong of Rhode Island, the 2005 Most Outstanding Track Performer, will vie to repeat his gold medal performances in the 200m and 400m dashes, while NCAA provisional qualifier Sean Quigley seeks to become the fifth La Salle runner to capture the 10,000m at the A-10 Championship. In addition, Saint Joseph's looks to extend its gold medal streak in the 4x400m relay to seven consecutive Championships.
The 2006 Championship will feature numerous student-athletes who have achieved NCAA regional qualifying status this season, including teammates Ben McCallum and Jason Moore of Charlotte in the 100m and 200m dashes and Charlotte's Courtney Patterson (100m, 200m) and Shareese Woods (200m, 400m). Moreover, junior Rachel Papin of La Salle will look to build on her NCAA automatic qualifying time of 33:15.18 in the 10,000m.
The first day of the 2006 Championship, which marks the inaugural year of competition for Charlotte in men's and women's outdoor track & field, will begin at 9:00am on Saturday, May 6, with the women's heptathlon. On Sunday, May 7, the men's decathlon begins the second day of competition at 8:45am.
