Saint Joseph's Runners Receive Atlantic 10 Honors

May 17, 2006

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Four Saint Joseph's Track members were honored on Tuesday by the Atlantic 10. Andria Smythe from the women's team and Teddy Meyers, Matt Petrocci and Andrew Thomas from the men's team were all named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team.

The Academic All-Conference Team was voted on by the Sports Information Directors of each of the schools in the A-10 conference. Nominees had to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and freshmen were not eligible.

Although Smythe did not compete in the outdoor track season due to injury, her outstanding performances during the indoor season earned her a spot on the team. The senior co-captain was the 2006 Atlantic 10 Indoor Champion in the Long Jump (19-01.25), third in the 55m (7.10) and fourth in the Triple Jump (37-03.00). Smythe also helped set a new Saint Joseph's record in the 4x200m by anchoring the team that finished third at the Penn State Relays with a time of 1:43.53. In the fall of 2005, the economics major was named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

On the men's side, Meyers, Petrocci and Thomas were all Atlantic 10 Outdoor Champions. Meyers took first place in the 5,000m, setting a new A-10 Championship record with his time of 14:33.25. The junior was also the Atlantic 10 Indoor Champion in the 5,000m with 14:40.89. Meyers finished ninth overall in the 5,000m at the Indoor ICAAAA Championships and was named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in the fall of 2005.

Senior co-captain Petrocci took first in the 800m at both the indoor and outdoor A-10 Championships this year (1:53.09, 1:51.57) while also running in the 4x400 (second place indoor, first outdoor) and 4x800 (second place outdoor). The biology major earned 13 IC4A qualifying times this season and is a member of the Army ROTC.

Thomas, a management major, was the Atlantic 10 Champion in the outdoor 400m (47.36) and the indoor 500m (1:04.43). He also anchored the 4x400 team that placed first outdoor (3:14.23) and second indoor (3:19.95). The senior co-captain set a new Saint Joseph's record for the 400m during the indoor trials at the IC4A championships with the fastest time of all qualifiers (47.22). In the fall of 2005 Thomas was named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Meyers, Petrocci and Thomas will all be competing at the NCAA Eastern Regional Championships May 26-27 held in Greensboro, NC.
