PHILADELPHIA -
The Saint Joseph's University track teams were in action this past weekend at both the Penn State National Invitational and the John Covert Classic, held at Lehigh University. At the Covert Classic, the women placed third out of nine teams in attendance. The men, competing in selected events, tied for ninth in the 11-team field at Lehigh. There was no team scoring in the Penn State event.
In Bethlehem, PA, the Hawk women's track squad benefited from both senior experience and another stellar performance from a standout freshman. Senior Valerie Ramirez took fourth place in the 60m hurdles despite falling during the finals. In the 400m, freshman Nicole McMullen took second place, running the race in 1:00.46, while senior Julie Lentz (1:01.04) was fourth. Senior Amanda Guthridge ran a 1:20.32 to take second in the 500m.
Sophomore Andrea Florida was first in the 3000m, finishing in 10:27.21. Junior Adriene Beltz was fifth, running a time of 11:12.83. Hawks ran second and third in the 5000m, with sophomore Amy Rhein turning in a 19:08.16 and senior Maddie Bell carding a 19:27.89. McMullen added her second runner-up finish when she leapt 18' 5 ¾" in the long jump.
On the men's side, a handful of Hawks competed at Lehigh while most of the squad headed to State College, PA for the Penn State National Invitational. At Lehigh, junior Matt Weaver placed fifth in the 400m with a time of 53.25. Senior Matt McClure threw the shot put 41' 2 ½", while classmate Brian O'Neill finished the 800m in 2:03.53.
At Penn State, junior Bobby Staten turned in a 6.94 in the 60m dash. That time qualifies him for the IC4A Championship meet. Senior co-captains Mike Tatara (1:06.28) and Joe Witiw (1:06.52) ran the eighth- and ninth-fastest 500m times in the Atlantic 10 this season. Sophomore Brendan Kearney took third in the 1000m, and his time of 2:29.96 was just 0.72 seconds shy of the top spot in the conference to date. Finally, senior Teddy Meyers placed sixth in the 3000m, running a time of 8:34.31.
The Hawks return to the indoor oval on Friday, February 2, at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, CT.
