PHILADELPHIA -
Hawk junior sprinter Bobby Staten was named Atlantic 10 Men's Indoor Track Co-Performer of the Week for January 8 after his performance at the Fordham Invitational on January 5. As a team, the Hawk men's track squad placed ninth of 14 at the meet, held in the Bronx. First place went to Rutgers University with 145 points.
Staten took first place in his preliminary heat of the 60m dash with a time of 6.96. He followed up on his IC4A-qualfying performance with a first-place finish in the finals. His time of 6.86 is a Saint Joseph's record in the 60m and is the fastest time in the Atlantic 10 this season. For his efforts, Staten was rewarded with conference Co-Performer of the Week honors, an award he shares with William Rhea of La Salle. The last Hawk to be named Indoor Track Performer of the Week was Mike DiDio, who received the honor on February 6, 2006.
The Hawks also received solid performances at Fordham from their younger runners. Freshman Brian Doherty ran the 800m in 2:00.69, earning him seventh place. In the 200m, freshmen Steven Philbrook and Christopher Caranante turned in times of 24.59 and 25.63, respectively. Sophomores Brendan Kearney and Justin Heinze scored for the Hawks in the distance races. Kearney's time of 2:34.62 earned him fourth place in the 1000m, while Heinze recorded a 15:45.35 for a fourth-place finish of his own in the 5000m. Senior Shawn Duffy placed sixth in that race with a time of 15:49.13.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, January 13, as the team travels to State College, PA for the Penn State Relays.
