PHILADELPHIA -
An early second half goal on a penalty corner opportunity led to the game-winning goal as the Saint Joseph's field hockey team lost to the Richmond Spiders, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field. The win is Richmond's 44th in a row against Atlantic 10 opposition.
Richmond (3-9, 2-0 Atlantic 10) got on the board first, scoring midway through the first half. Adrian Pickar was left alone in front of the cage and put the ball past SJU goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer for the first of her two scores on the day.
Saint Joseph's (6-6, 1-1 Atlantic 10) equalized less than six minutes later as senior Theresa Barbati scored her third goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Anna Schreuders. The goal gives Barbati 11 points on the season, putting her at the top of the squad.
The tie would be short-lived, however, as Pickar scored her second goal of the game with 5:31 to go in the half. The Spiders then padded their lead less than two minutes into the second stanza on a goal by Sarah Blythe-Wood. The goal came as a result of Richmond's lone corner opportunity of the game.
SJU cut the deficit to one with 11:42 to go in the game as Richmond goalkeeper Becca Weaver made the initial save on a shot by Barbati, but could not corral the rebound. Sophomore Kellie Walter put the ball into the cage for her first career goal. The Hawks had a few opportunities late in the game to tie, but two shots went just wide of the cage, and the comeback effort fell short.
The Hawks return to action on Friday, October 12, when the Rhode Island Rams visit Finnesey Field. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
