March 4, 2007

Box Score

PLANT CITY, FL - The Saint Joseph's softball team dropped its opening games of the 2007 season this weekend competing in the Plant City Tournament in Plant City, Florida. On Saturday, the Hawks dropped a pair of games to Michigan State and Lehigh, 4-3 and 10-2, respectively. On Sunday, SJU lost both games of a doubleheader with Harvard, 8-0.

In the opener, the Hawks jumped out to a 3-1 lead over the Spartans heading into the bottom of the seventh. But their lead wasn't meant to be as Michigan State rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the seventh to pull out the 4-3 win.

In Saturday's second game, Lehigh jumped out to a quick lead and never trailled as it downed Saint Joseph's 10-2. One bright spot for the Hawks, sophomore Dani Gonzales, who missed nearly half the 2006 season with an injury, accounted for the two runs with a homer.

In Sunday's matchups, Harvard's offense jumped out to early leads, while its defense was solid through out, holding the Hawks scoreless in both contests, while plating eight runs in each game.

Saint Joseph's (0-4) returns to action Monday with a doubleheader versus Robert Morris.
