Box Score

HARTFORD, Conn. - Shooting just 7-of-27 from the floor in the second half (25.9 percent), the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team fell at Hartford, 80-56, Saturday afternoon at Chase Arena. The Hawks got 32 points combined from juniors Amy Gillespie and Mariame Djouara, but fell to 4-4 on the year with the loss.

Hartford (5-4) got out of the gates quickly, going 5-of-5 from the field and 1-of-1 from the line to take an 11-2 advantage on a jump shot by Lisa Etienne at 16:13. At the opposite end, Saint Joseph's came out slow, possibly showing the wear from Thursday's triple overtime win against Villanova as the Hawks went 0-of-2 from the floor with two turnovers and four fouls during that same stretch.

Trailing 18-9, Saint Joseph's offense began to hit its rhythm, putting together a 12-3 run from 10:59 to 7:40. Gillespie accounted for 10 of SJU's 12 points, including a pair of free throws to give the Hawks their first lead of the game, 21-20 at 7:40.

Both teams would exchange baskets over the next few minutes.

Down 27-26, Hartford used a 14-4 run to open up a 40-29 advantage on a Katie Kelley layup with :21 seconds left.

Saint Joseph's was able to cut the deficit to single digits though as freshman guard Katie Kuester buried a 27-foot three pointer as time expired to bring SJU within 40-32 entering halftime.

In the second half, Saint Joseph's offense again stalled, going 1-of-12 from the floor to start the stanza as Hartford extended its lead to 15, 54-39, with 11:20 left in the game.

Saint Joseph's cut the deficit to 11, 54-43, behind a set of free throws by junior forward Brittany Ford and a layup by junior guard Djouara at 9:08, but that is as close as the Hawks would get. Hartford would outscore Saint Joseph's 26-13 to end the game.

For the game, Gillespie paced the Hawks with 17 points, while Djouara added 15 points.

At the other end Diana Delva paced five Hartford Hawks in double figures with 20 points.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Friday at Old Dominion. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
