Senior Erika Rosenwinkel and junior Brooke Darreff went a combined 6-for-7 at the plate and five different Hawks collected a RBI as Saint Joseph's softball team topped Lafayette, 6-4, at Metzgar Field Wednesday.
Saint Joseph's fell behind 2-0 to start the game as the host Leopards tallied two runs off Hawks' senior pitcher Dani Gonzales. Christina Giambrone drove in the first run with a RBI single, and came around to score on a double by Kristin Garganio.
The Hawks answered back in the top of the second, scoring four runs to take a 4-2 edge. Senior Sue Lebow's bases-loaded walk plated Rosenwinkel for SJU's first run. Senior Beka Shumock followed and a was struck by a pitch, scoring Gonzales, while sophomore Laura Cardone drew a walk, allowing freshman Bernadette Moran to score the third SJU run. Lebow would come around to score the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch as SJU tallied just two hits, but scored four runs.
Gonzales would be touched up for a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third, tying the game at four all.
Darreff and Rosenwinkel put the game away for good in the top of the fifth though as they drilled back-to-back solo home runs to center field to put the Hawks up 6-4.
Freshman Erin Gallagher, who entered in relief of Gonzales in the bottom of the fourth, allowed just two hits over her four innings of work as Saint Joseph's improved to 16-13 with the win.
The Hawks return to action this Friday versus Massachusetts at Good Sheopard Field on the campus of La Salle University. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
