Saint Joseph's Hall of Famer Katie Gardler has been named director of women's basketball operations, Hawks' head coach Cindy Griffin has announced.
Finishing fourth all-time in scoring with 1,663 points, Gardler (nee Curry) earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference and All-District selections three straight seasons. Helping the Hawks to four-straight Big 5 titles and a berth in the1990 NCAA Tournament, the 1993 graduate of Saint Joseph's, was named the A-10's MVP after averaging 19.4 points, 3.1 rebounds 3.8 assists and 3.1 steals per game her senior season.
One of the top three-points shooters in team history, Gardler knocked down a then-record 216 three pointers over her four seasons and competed in the 1993 National Three-Point Shooting contest. On the defensive end, she proved a tenacious player, capping her SJU career second in program history with 325 career steals. Gardler was inducted into both the Philadelphia Big 5 and SJU Basketball Halls of Fame in 1999 and the Saint Joseph's University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.
Replacing former SJU great Ellen (Shields) Fitzpatrick as director of women's basketball operations, Gardler will be in charge of team travel plans, as well as running the highly successful SJU Ball-Handling Kids Club and assisting with the Hawk Hill Roundball Club and Saint Joseph's women's basketball booster organization.
