COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Battling hard for 40 minutes, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team put up a tough fight against #8 Maryland, but it wasn't enough as the Terps topped the Hawks, 94-71 Tuesday at the Comcast Center.
Maryland took control of the game early, opening a 12-3 gap to start the game, but the Hawks answered to make it a one-possession game. Saint Joseph's used an 11-5 run over a four-minute span as senior guard Katie Kuester (Media, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) brought SJU within 17-14 on a three pointer at 11:26.
The teams would exchange baskets, but Maryland would open up a 14-edge as it outscored SJU 16-5 from 9:48 to 5:41 as a pair of free throws by Anjale Barrett gave the Terps a 37-23 lead.
Saint Joseph's redshirt sophomore forward Ashley Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) made it a 44-33 game with 1:52 to go in the half, but Maryland scored the final five points of the half to take a 49-33 lead into the second stanza.
Despite falling down 53-33 to start the second half, Saint Joseph's continued to fight back and cut into the deficit. Behind a 14-3 run, the Hawks made it a 58-47 game on a baseline jumper by sophomore guard Erin Shields (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) at 12:43.
The Hawks would get no closer though as Maryland held on for their fifth-straight win.
Shields finished with a team-high 16 points, while junior guard Ashley Prim (Ansonia, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral) added 15. Kuester was the third Hawk in double figures with 13 points.
The Hawks return to action Saturday against Sacred Heart. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start at Hagan Arena with SJU's men's basketball team hosting Penn State afterwards.
