Saint Joseph's junior Monica Aguilar became the 26th Hawk in softball porgram history to reach 100 hits as SJu picked up a pair of wins Saturday in the second day of play at the USF UnderArmour Invitational. The Hawks topped Wagner, 5-0, in the opener and held off Toledo, 6-5, in the second game.
Standing on 99 career hits, Aguilar smacked her 100th in the top of the first against Toledo, scoring senior Laura Cardone to take a 1-0 lead.
Saint Joseph's added a pair of runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by junior Bernadette Moran and a RBI single by Aguilar. A threer-run fourth opened a 6-0 edge as sophomore Dana Parks drove ina a pair on a single and Cardone picked up a RBI on an infield single.
Toledo, which was limited to two hits over four innings by sophomore Taryn Ashway, came through with five runs in the sixth against Lauren Pembleton. However, junior Erin Gallagher came in to close out the game and preserve the win.
In the opener, Gallagher was stellar in the circle, scattering two hits, while striking out five in a 5-0 shutout.
At the plate, SJU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with senior Dana Bieniek and sophomore Shannon Kramer each collecting a RBI. A RBI single by Morgan Earling lifted SJU to a 3-0 lead in the fourth, with Moran and Kramer adding RBI in the fifth for the 5-0 win.
The Hawks return to action Sunday against FIU.
