Softball Drops Pitchers' Duel To Loyola Marymount, 1-0

March 9, 2012

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In a game that saw just six hits and take little more than an hour, the Hawks and Loyola Marymount battled seven innings in a pitchers' duel as SJU's junior Taryn Ashway struck out four. Unfortunately, for the Hawks, the Lions would score the lone run of the game to prevail, 1-0, in the opening game of the Amy S. Harrison Classic.

Saint Joseph's sophomore Maria Ficca picked up the first hit of the game in the third, singling to lead off the inning. She'd advance as far as second, but would get not further as the Lions got out of the inning.

Loyola Marymount (14-7) tallied to lone run of the game in the bottom of the third as Kylie Ahlo tripled with one out and came around to score on a single by Samantha Nelson.

Sophomore Morgan Earling singled in the fifth and senior Bernadette Moran singled in the seventh, but neither could reach further than second as the Hawks dropped the hard-fought game.

Ashway was the hard-luck loser, striking out four, while walking none over six innings.
