April 10, 2012

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's softball team swept its doubleheader at Lafayette on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks won the opener 4-0 behind the stellar pitching of junior Taryn Ashway and rebounded from an early hole in game two to win 9-2.

In game one, Saint Joseph's opened the scoring in the top of the first on a RBI single by junior Rochelle Christman that scored classmate Dana Parks from third.

The Hawks (15-19) added three more runs in the third, with freshman Lauren Rendon delivering the biggest blow. With freshman Melissa Ruf and Parks at second and third, Rendon delivered a two-run single to right field, and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder. A wild pitch by the Leopards' Alex Campanaro allowed Rendon to score and give SJU a 4-0 edge.

That was all the room Ashway needed to close the game out as she scattered two hits, while striking out eight to earn the victory.

In the nightcap, the host Leopards jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring once in the first and once in the third against SJU senior pitcher Lauren Pembleton.

Lafayette (8-21) seemed to be in control through five innings, but the Hawks broke the game wide open in the top of the sixth. Saint Joseph's sent 13 players to the plate, scoring nine runs on eight hits and an error.

Christman collected the first RBI with a single that scored Melissa Ruf, with freshman Nicole Palase following with a RBI single that scored Bernadette Moran. A RBI fielder's choice by Christine Bednar made it 3-2, with senior Alaina Loguidice and freshman Traneya White coming behind her with RBIs each.

Moran delivered the decisive blow, homering over the center field wall to make it 9-2.

Ashway, who came into the game in the fourth, worked around a seventh-inning walk to earn the win and move to 9-9 on the year.

The Hawks return to action on Thurdsay when they host Drexel.
