KINGSTON, R.I. - The men's track and field team placed third out of 12 teams at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend, hosted by the University of Rhode Island at the Mackal Fieldhouse. The Hawks amassed 78 points en route to finishing behind only Charlotte and Rhode Island.
Junior Tommy O'Kane led all Hawks with a second-place finish in the mile. O'Kane checked in with a time of 4:17.38, directly followed by junior Aaron Leskow (4:17.82) and sophomore Logan Mohn (4:18.30) with third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively.
O'Kane continued his dominance as he ran the leadoff leg of the DMR team that took home Saint Joseph's only other second-place finish. O'Kane led junior Peter Larmann, sophomore James Gentile, and Leskow to the silver medal as the group posted a time of 10:05.28.
The sophomore duo of Tyler Gallen and Matthew McGarvey led the middle distance events: Gallen with a third-place finish (1:04.31) in the 500m and McGarvey with a third-place finish in the 800m. McGarvey's personal-record 1:54.25 earned him his first individual bid for the IC4As.
In the longer distance events, graduate student Kevin McDonnell left his mark with a third-place finish (14:33.68) in the 5000m and fourth-place finish (8:31.71) in the 3000m.
Junior Jonathan Eisemann ran a personal-record 6.93 in the preliminaries of the 60m dash en route to an eventual 6.95 in the finals to take home a fourth-place finish in the event. Eisemann also placed in the 200m, once again setting a new personal record in the preliminary heat (22.15) before checking in at 22.20 for a seventh-place finish in the finals.
Sophomore Brendan Robert took sixth (50.47) in the 400m, followed by junior Derrick Henry's eighth-place performance (50.63). Senior captain Garrett Barbalinardo clocked in at 1:05.19 for a seventh-place finish in the 500m while Mohn capped the middle distance events with an eighth-place finish (2:34.92) in the 1000m.
Sophomore Paul Szulewski took eighth (8:35.69) in the 3000m while graduate student Dan Roark checked in at 14:48.71 for a seventh-place finish in the 5000m.
The 4x400m relay team of Robert, Larmann, junior Griff Roberts, and Gallen clocked in at 3:21.08 for a fourth-place finish while senior Dave Manion, Leskow, Gentile, and sophomore Steven Butenewicz ran the 4x800m in 7:48.50, good for a sixth-place finish.
In the jumps, freshman Alec Peabody made his first A-10 Championship a good one, taking home a sixth-place finish with a mark of 6.89m in the long jump.
The Hawks will now prepare for the IC4A Championships which will be held from March 2-3 in Boston, Mass.
