Directions to Track and Tennis Center
PHILADELPHIA - The men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Boston University's Track and Tennis Center on March 2-3 to compete in the 2013 IC4A/ECAC Championships. Between both squads, 22 Hawks have qualified for the prestigious meet and will represent Saint Joseph's this weekend.
"The competition at this meet and the quality of the Boston University facility always brings out the best in all the competitors," said track director and women's track head coach Kevin Quinn. "It should be a great meet and terrific conclusion to a great indoor season."
On the men's side, Quinn expects great success from both individual and relay performances.
"The men are coming off their best team showing at the Atlantic 10 meet in recent memory and are anticipating another weekend of strong showings. Leading contenders include [sophomore] Logan Mohn (mile), [sophomore] Tyler Gallen (500m), [junior] Jonathan Eisemann (sprints), [graduate student] Kevin McDonnell (5000m) and the three relays."
Coming off of a third-place performance in the 500m at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships on February 16-17, Gallen highlights the Hawks as he heads into this year's IC4A 500m ranked 13th (1:03.34#) out of 85 qualifiers. No stranger to the IC4A scene, Gallen set his personal record in the 500m (1:04.01) en route to a 14th-place finish at the 2012 IC4As.
McDonnell will head into his final IC4A Championship ranked 17th (14:19.69) out of 80 qualifiers in the 5000m, the same event in which he placed 17th at last season's IC4As. McDonnell has also qualified for the 3000m (48th, 8:14.40) and the mile (139th, 4:14.44), making him the only Hawk from both squads to qualify for three IC4A events. The fifth-year standout is coming off of two impressive performances after taking third in the 5000m and fourth in the 3000m at A-10s.
Eisemann will represent the Hawks in the sprinting events having qualified for both the 60m (6.93) and 200m (21.76#). Eisemann is coming off of personal-record performances in both events after placing fourth in the 60m and seventh in the 200m at A-10s.
In the middle-distance events, sophomore Steven Butenewicz has qualified for both the 800m and 1000m while the junior/sophomore pair of Tommy O'Kane and Mohn will look to take on the 1000m and mile. A second junior/sophomore pair of Aaron Leskow and Paul Szulewski has qualified for both the mile and 3000m.
Senior captain Garrett Barbalinardo and junior Griff Roberts will join Gallen in the 500m while sophomore Matthew McGarvey and seniors Dave Manion and Andrew Townsend will compete in the 800m. Graduate student Dan Roark will also join McDonnell in the 5000m.
All three relay teams have qualified for the meet with the season's fastest DMR team (9:54.45) ranked 16th overall.
Freshman Alec Peabody will compete in the long jump in his first IC4A Championship ranked 37th with a personal-record jump mark of 7.06m.
On the women's side, Quinn believes that his competitors will find motivation from the Atlantic 10 Championships.
"The women will draw inspiration from solid performances at the A-10s with [senior captain] Hannah Boyce coming on strongly in the high jump and [freshman] Dannah Hayward (500m), [junior] Elizabeth Barrett (mile), and two relays leading the way," said Quinn.
Barrett and junior Emma Slattery have both qualified for the ECAC mile while Barrett will also compete in the 1000m and Slattery will take on the 3000m. Senior captain Sara Walker has also qualified for the 1000m with a personal-record performance (2:55.96) this past Sunday at George Mason's Last Chance Meet.
Hayward has qualified for the 500m in her first ECACs after a personal-record (1:16.67) performance that was good for a fifth-place finish at A-10s.
Junior Erin James will tackle the long-distance category as she has qualified for the 5000m in a personal-record 17:22.13.
All three relay teams have qualified for the meet with the season's fastest DMR team (11:53.95) ranked 28th overall.
The Hawks will send two high jumpers to ECACs in Boyce and sophomore Brianna Hunt. Boyce is coming off of a breakthrough performance after a second-place, ECAC-qualifying (1.70m) performance at A-10s while Hunt's 1.70m mark met the standard at Princeton's New Year's Invitational back on December 9.
The IC4A Championships will kick off on Friday, March 1 at 4:00 p.m. with the commencement of the heptathlon. The ECAC Championships will also begin on Friday, March 1 with the start of the pentathlon scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
