Game Notes

• Saint Joseph's has now won three of its last four on the season. Langston Galloway had the game-winning free throws and a team-high 14 points in the win over Xavier. • Hawks have now won two straight openers in the A-10 Tournament and seven of their last eight. • This is SJU's fourth consecutive berth in the quarterfinals - the last time the Hawks were in the semifinals was in 2011. • Carl Jones needs five points to reach 1,800 in his career - a number that only two other players have achieved (Jameer Nelson, Bernard Blunt). Jones moved into third place on the all-time list with 1,795 points after scoring 11 in the Xavier win. • If the Hawks advance, they would meet the Temple-UMass winner in Saturday's semfinals at 4 p.m., which will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.

SECOND-HALF HAWKS: SJU had a better second half against Xavier, hitting 45 percent from the field, compared to 37.5 percent in the first half. The Hawks also made 4-of-9 three-pointers, where they only made 2-of-9 in the first half.

ON THE LINE: Saint Joseph's turned in its best performance of the year from the foul line in the Xavier win, hitting 16-of-19 (84.2 %). The Hawks had only converted 80 percent in one other game this season, the win over Drexel on Dec. 31, when they shot 83.3 percent.

HOMETOWN HERO: Halil Kanacevic, from nearby Staten Island, had a solid game on Thursday, with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists despite fouling out with 2:04 to play. The 36 minutes played by the junior were the most since Dec. 11 at Villanova. After Xavier went on a 10-run to take a 41-33 lead, Kanacevic keyed the Hawks' 12-0 run with seven points, including a three-pointer that gave SJU a 45-44 lead.

MONEY IN THE BANK: Langston Galloway's free throw percentage has dipped slightly this season to 74.6 (from 78.5 in 2011-12), but the junior was on target against Xavier, making all four attempts, including the game-winning shots with 1.4 seconds to play.

SJU AND THE QUARTERFINALS: Saint Joseph's owns an all-time record of 14-13 in the A-10 quarterfinals, with the last win being a 93-90 overtime decision over Duquesne in 2011. The Hawks eventually lost in the semifinals to Dayton, 64-63.

TAKING CARE OF THE BALL: Saint Joseph's did a good job of limiting the turnovers against Xavier, committing just nine. In the previous game vs. Charlotte, the Hawks had 13.

JONES AND THE LIST: Carl Jones is now the third leading scorer in Saint Joseph's history with 1,795 career points. He surpassed Ahmad Nivins (1,789) on Thursday when he scored 11 points against Xavier.

TOURNEY TALES: Saint Joseph's has posted a 34-28 all-time record in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Hawks have reached the championship game five times (1986, 1997, 2005, 2006, 2008).

ALL-LEAGUE GUY: Ronald Roberts is the Hawks' lone All-Conference performer this season, earning Third Team honors. It marks his first All-League selection although he was the Sixth Man of the Year in 2012. Roberts has been one of the most consistent Hawks this season and has put up career-best numbers in scoring average (11.6), rebounds (247), rebounding average (8.5), free throw percentage (68.6) and minutes played (31.2).

HAWKS VS. THE POLLS: This is the second time SJU will be meeting VCU when the Rams are ranked. In January, VCU was 22nd and 19th in the polls when they scored a 92-86 overtime win over the Hawks. Saint Joseph's is 1-4 this year against ranked teams, and 3-5 dating back to last season. SJU's only win over a ranked team this season came here in the Barclays Center, when the Hawks outlasted #20/21 Notre Dame, 79-70, in overtime. SJU also lost to #11 Creighton, #14 Butler and #18 Saint Louis this season.

IRON MAN: Langston Galloway has played 40 minutes in back-to-back games (Charlotte, Xavier) and tops the team with his 35.5 average.
