Junior Jordan Carter tossed six strong innings, allowing just two runs on six hits, but the Saint Joseph's baseball team ultimately fell to #10/5 Mississippi State, 4-1, at Dudy Noble Field on Saturday.
Saint Joseph's (2-6) got on the board in the top of the first, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Chris Hueth that scored Kevin Kratochwill, who led off the game with a double.
Mississippi State (13-0) knotted the game in the bottom of the inning as Adam Frazier scored on a double play groundout by Alex Detz.
The Bulldogs broke the deadlock in the bottom of the seventh. After a pair of singles left runners on the corners with nobody out, pinch hitter Tyler Fullerton singled to right to bring home Derrick Armstrong with the go-ahead run. MSU then added two more insurance runs in the eighth.
The Hawks loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth, but Jonathan Holder induced a double play ball to end the game.
Carter fell to 0-1 on the year, pitching into the seventh and allowing two runs on six hits. Ross Mitchell got the win for Mississippi State, improving to 4-0 with three scoreless innings of relief. Holder notched his fourth save of the year.
Anthony Cirillo was 2-for-2 on the day, with a pair of walks; he has hit safely in seven of SJU's first eight games.
The teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday. The first game of the twinbill is set for 2:00 p.m. Eastern.
