Women's Track Competes at Delaware Open

NEWARK, Del. - Led by first-place performances from senior captain Hannah Boyce (high jump), sophomore Gabriella Becattini (triple jump), and freshman Lauren Hehir (3000m steeplechase), the women's track and field team competed at the Delaware Outdoor Open on Saturday afternoon. The meet was hosted by the University of Delaware at Delaware Stadium.

Coming off of a sixth-place finish (1.61m) in the high jump at the Colonial Relays last weekend, Boyce posted a mark of 1.65m (5' 5") to take home the gold out of nine total competitors. Boyce led five Hawks who placed in the top five of their respective jump events.

Becattini posted a personal-record triple jump (11.30m, 37' 1") en route to a first-place finish out of seven jumpers in the event. The sophomore improved on her previous personal record in the triple jump by 0.11m for the win.

In her first collegiate 3000m steeplechase, Hehir took first out of six total competitors with a time of 11:30.33, more than 12 seconds faster than the event's second-place finisher.

Three additional Hawks placed in the jump events, led by sophomore Brianna Hunt's second-place finish in a season-best 1.65m (5' 5") high jump. Senior captain Genevieve Ruppel took home fourth in the long jump (5.17m, 16' 11 1/2") and sophomore Kayla Charles rounded out the high jump with a fifth-place finish in a season-best 1.52m (4' 11 3/4").

The 100H saw three Hawks place in the top four. Charles led the pack with a second-place finish (14.84) while senior Francesca D'Angelo (15.03) and freshman Dannah Hayward (15.04) crossed the finish line in third and fourth, respectively.

Two of SJU's relay teams placed in the top three in their respective events. The 4x400m relay of junior Mercedes Yanora, senior captain Shannon Geddes and freshmen Alana Whitmarsh and Jenna DeAngelo took second place in 4:02.63 while the 4x100m relay of Yanora, D'Angelo, freshman Carly McGowan and sophomore Kathryn Polaski took third in 48.95.

Yanora also posted a fourth-place finish with a season-best 59.51 in the 400m while sophomore Kathryn Pratt notched third in the 800m with a personal-record 2:18.96. Pratt improved upon her original personal record, set in the indoor season of her freshman campaign, by over two seconds.

A veteran/rookie pair rounded out the distance events for the Crimson and Gray. Junior Darcy O'Connor recorded a fifth-place finish in the 3000m (11:33.99) while freshman Tess Doggett completed her first collegiate 3000m steeple in 12:05.08, good for fourth.

Saint Joseph's returns to action next weekend at the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton University in Princeton, N.J. The meet is scheduled to be held Friday, April 19 through Saturday, April 20. The Hawks' first event is tentatively scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Weaver Stadium. Additionally, SJU will be in action on Saturday, April 20 at the Widener Invitational in Chester, Pa.
