Senior Greg Kumpel was 3-for-3 with a run scored and senior Quinn Renner added two hits and a run, but it wasn't enough as the Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to La Salle, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a weekend series at Smithson Field.
Saint Joseph's (17-18 overall, 5-4 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Kevin Kratochwill led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a single by Collin Forgey. Two batters later, Kratochwill came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Mike Muha.
La Salle (14-19 overall, 8-4 Atlantic 10) equalized in the fourth on a single by Mark Williams.
The Hawks went in front once again in the bottom half, scoring on a wild pitch and a groundout by Anthony Cirillo.
The Explorers hung a five-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth on five hits to take a 6-3 lead. They extended the margin to four runs on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth.
Renner led off the ninth with a single and came around to score on a two-out double by Stefan Kancylarz, but Pat Christensen was able to close the door for the Explorers to notch his sixth save.
Shane Hollman (2-3) earned the win for La Salle, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in five and a third innings. Daniel Thorpe took the loss for Saint Joseph's, allowing four runs on six hits in four-plus innings. Thorpe struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Kumpel finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single, while Renner posted a double as well.
The Hawks will be idle until Friday, when they begin a three-game conference series at Richmond. First pitch from Pitt Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
