WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Freshman Dannah Hayward broke Saint Joseph's 400H record as she and senior Erin James qualified for the 2013 ECAC Championships at William and Mary's 48th Annual Colonial Relays this weekend. The meet showcased athletes and teams from 40 colleges and universities, professional clubs, and high schools in Williamsburg, Va. for the three-day meet that took place at Zable Stadium. With 20 combined points, the Hawks took 18th-place out of 27 total teams.
Hayward made SJU history on Friday afternoon as she broke SJU's 400H record en route to a fourth-place finish in the event. In just her second collegiate 400H, Hayward posted a personal-record 1:01.41 to improve upon Saint Joseph's previous school record in the event (1:02.65) set by Kristin Andrews in 2009 by over an entire second. Hayward's fourth-place finish out of 45 total competitors ranked her the top-freshman finisher and earned six points for the Crimson and Gray.
James also took home a fourth-place finish for the Hawks with a personal-record steeplechase (10:38.93), good for five Hawk points and a slot for ECACs.
Sophomore Kayla Charles covered the other hurdle event for the Hawks, clocking in at 14.71 for the 100H preliminaries on Friday and coming back with a 14.70 for a sixth-place finish on Saturday afternoon. Charles grabbed four individual points and ran the second leg of the DMR of senior Sara Walker and freshmen Alana Whitmarsh and Lauren Hehir that took seventh (12:10.95) for two additional points.
Senior Hannah Boyce earned two points with a sixth-place finish in the high jump. The captain recorded a mark of 1.61m (5' 3 1/4") while classmate Erin Giampietro's eight-place finish in the 10,000m (39:31.41, PR) earned another SJU point.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Saturday, April 13 at the Delaware Invitational in Newark, Del. Start time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
