Moo Moyer, a nationally-successful ASA travel ball coach, is in his third year as head coach of the Saint Joseph's University softball team. Just the fourth softball coach in the 21-year history of the program, Moyer replaced Charlie Wieners in 2002, who retired after an 11-year stint as the team's coach. With a 5-2 win over St. Bonaventure on April 13, 2003, Moyer became the fastest Hawk softball coach to 50 wins. His 62 wins rank second among SJU softball mentors and his .697 winning percentage is tops among coaches who spent more than one year at the helm.
In his first year at the helm, Moyer guided SJU to its best start in school history, 16-1, before finishing with a 32-17 overall record. He also guided SJU to a 12-9 record in A-10 play, placing third in the standings and earning a berth in the four-team conference tournament. Despite losing four three-year starters from the year before, Moyer strung together a 25-15 record against a much improved schedule in 2003. The Hawks went 8-4, good for third in conference action.
Moyer, who's daughter Dana (Saint Joseph's, '97) was a standout player for the Hawk softball team, served as an assistant coach during the final month of the 2001 season, helping SJU win seven of its last nine regular season games and place third in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
As head coach of the Haze Softball Club, Moyer won two Pennsylvania State Championships (1998, 2001). His team, composed of players 18 years of age and younger, placed seventh (of 84 teams) at the Amateur Softball Association National Tournament in 2000 and ninth at the 2001 ASA Tournament. Many of his players have gone on to compete at the collegiate level at Saint Joseph's, including current Hawks juniors Robin Berry and Alicia Cunic and former Hawks Megan Brown and Missy Rhodes, Class of 2002.
A standout player in his own right, Moyer played five years in the Perkiomen Twilight League, earning MVP honors and winning the league batting crown one time. The centerfielder led his Collegeville team to the PTL crown in both 1970 and 1971. He later played outfield and first base for 10 years in the Norristown Softball League, leading his team to two state ASA championships. At Saint Joseph's, Moyer has brought along his highly-successful staff from his Haze coaching days Mike Cooperstein and his daughter, Dana, who had previously served as an assistant at SJU.
