Baseball Falls in Series Finale at George Mason, 6-2

FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason scored three times in the second and three times in the third to top the Saint Joseph's baseball team, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon and prevent the Hawks from securing a sweep of the weekend series at Spuhler Field.

Saint Joseph's (9-12 overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Deon Stafford led off the game with a single before John Brue followed with a single of his own.  Brue was thrown out trying to extend the hit into a double, but Stafford ended up on third, which allowed him to score on a passed ball to put the Hawks ahead.

George Mason (10-14 overall, 2-4 Atlantic 10) took its first lead of the series in the bottom of the second, as a pair of walks brought up Jake Kalish, who lofted a three-run home run to right to make it a 3-1 game.

Stafford scored again in the third as Brue doubled off the wall in left center with one out to cut the deficit in half.  The Patriots answered with another three-spot in the bottom of the inning as Kent Blackstone hit a two-run triple and Brady Acker followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-2.

The Hawks threatened in the eighth as Matt Maul and Dominic Cuoci singled and Cal Jadacki walked, but Luke Willis snared a liner to center off the bat of Taylor Boyd to leave the bases loaded.  Joe Williams then retired the Hawks in order in the ninth to end the game.

Tim Ponto struggled on the mound, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks in two and a third innings, to fall to 1-4.  Tyler Zombro earned the win for Mason, improving to 3-1 after allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings.

The Hawks return to action later this week with a game at Villanova on Thursday and a home contest with Bryant on Friday.
