OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Saint Joseph's rising junior Madison Clarke helped Team Canada to a fifth place finish at the World Cup of Softball XI.
One of 19 athletes that played for Canada's National Team, Clarke appeared in a pair of games as the Canadian squad finished fifth overall in the 13-team tournament.
The SJU pitcher made her tournament debut against the USA Elite squad, throwing 0.2 innings of scoreless relief and adding a strikeout in an eventual loss. Clarke followed with 1.2 innings against eventual champion Japan. For the event, she finished with a 3.33 ERA and two strikeouts over 2.1 innings.
Clarke, who helped Canada to a fourth place at the Junior World Championship last summer, has been a key component to Saint Joseph's pitching staff the past two seasons. A two-year starter, she has gone 25-14, striking out 133 over 237.1 innings of work. Garnering Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, National Fastpitch Coaches Association Northeast All-Region Third Team and College Sports Madness Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Year accolades as a freshman, she followed this past season helping the Hawks to the title game of the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Prior to coming to Hawk Hill, Clarke played for travel teams Lloydminster Rebels and Calahoo Seniors, helping the Rebels to the gold medal at the U21 Alberta Provincial Championships and a bronze at the Canadian National Championships.. The youngest player selected to Team Alberta for the U21 Canada Games, she was also named the 2011 Softball Alberta Female Minor Player of the Year and selected a First Team All-Star for the U16 Canadian Nationals in 2011 after boasting a 1.57 ERA.
