CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Saint Joseph's softball team wrapped up play at the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational on Sunday as the Hawks fell to Quinnipiac, 4-1.
Quinnipiac jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as it scored twice in the first and once in the second.
Ahead by three, the Bobcats added a run in the fourth and it could have been more, but junior Amanda Kulp made a highlight-reel catch in center field to rob a grandslam and keep the game at 4-0.
Lauren Reilly tried to help the Hawks rally in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI double that scored Stacey Mayer to make it 4-1. But the Bobcats quickly ended the threat with a grounder to end the game.
In the circle, Ashley Ventura took the loss allowing four earned runs over six innings, while striking out three. Kulp collected two of SJU's three hits on the day, with Reilly picking up the other with the RBI doubel.
The Hawks (9-11) are back in action next weekend when they open Atlantic 10 play with a three-game series at Saint Louis starting with a doubleheader on Saturday.
