Baseball Drops Series Opener at Dayton

The Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped the opening game of its weekend series at Dayton, falling by a score of 11-6 at DP&L Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Hawks took an early 2-0 lead on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Dominic Cuoci.

The Flyers answered in the second, scoring four runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Dayton then extended the margin with single runs in the third and fifth to make it a 6-2 game.

SJU got one back in the sixth on a solo home run by Cuoci, but the hosts scored five times in the bottom of the inning to expand their lead to 11-3.

Andrew Cossetti hit a double in the seventh to score Brendan Hueth before Brian Markoski added an RBI groundout and Brian Vance drove in a run after reaching on an error in the ninth, but that would be all for the Hawks.

Hunter Wolfe notched the win for Dayton, improving to 7-4 on the season, while Jordan DiValerio took the loss for SJU to fall to 4-4.

The series is set to continue on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
