Murphy's 24-Rebound Performance Not Enough in Men's Basketball's Loss to Chestnut Hill in Season-Finale

Box Score

PHILADELHPIA – Connor Murphy's monstrous 24-rebound performance could not prevent Chestnut Hill from pulling away for a 93-82 win over the University of the Sciences men's basketball team in the Devils' season-finale on Saturday afternoon.

Needing 21 rebounds entering the game to finish the season averaging a double-double, the freshman's 24 boards were tied for the third most by a player in Division II this season.

Murphy ends the season tied for fifth in the program's single-season history with 3.7 offensive rebounds per game, and sixth with 6.5 defensive rebounds per game.

He also scored 13 points on the afternoon to record his 12th double-double of the season, and the rookie led USciences with six assists and two blocks to help the Devils finish with season-highs of 53 rebounds and seven rejections.

Jordan White cemented his place in USciences history on Saturday, making both of his free throw attempts to end the year with an 88.4 free throw percentage, now the program's single-season record.

The redshirt-sophomore finished with 12 points, and he was joined in double-figures by senior JJ Melchior, who ended his career with a season-high 13-point performance.

Sean Simon tied a career-high by making seven triples en route to leading all players with 25 points.

The sophomore's 65 –pointers on the year now rank sixth in the program's single-season annals.

As a team, University of the Sciences made 12 3-pointers to break the program's Division I single-season team record with 194.

Notably, freshman Javon Gordon finished with new season-bests of six rebounds and six assists, to go along with six points.

University of the Sciences quickly found itself down 12-2 just 2:50 in, and the Devils trailed by as many as 16, 28-12, with 8:37 left in the first half.

Still trailing by double-digits, 35-25, entering the final minute and a half, Simon and Murphy teamed for a 10-3 surge over the final 1:17 to make it a single-possession game entering the half.

Simon then tied the score for the first time all afternoon, 38-38, with a triple just 25 seconds out of the locker room, and the game was played within two possessions with 10 lead changes and four ties over the next 13 and a half minutes.

During the stretch, Simon hit back-to-back 3-pointers 25 seconds apart to give University of the Sciences its largest advantage, 59-53, with 12:45 to play.

Chestnut Hill would come back to tie the score for a final time at 63-63 with 10:09 to go, and the two teams would go on to trade seven consecutive baskets, one of which gave USciences its final lead, 73-72, on a Gordon layup 6:53 remaining, after Melchior had scored eight consecutive points for the Devils.

The Griffins took over from there though, holding University of the Sciences scoreless for the next 5:21 while scoring 16 unanswered in the process to pull away.
